Clouds cover the sky thick and black, lightening arcs down in most sections of the world. No one understands why it is how it is, we've just come to accept it. The sun still shines on small portions of the world but Ether Frost isn't one of them. Farmers make their livings in what we now call hot spots. Area's flooded with sunlight with lush grounds and fertile soil base. They create crops, harvest them and sell them as a living. However raids on these farms happen often. Private armies have been hired to secure many of them, leaving rich capitalists with all the farm land.
Most if not all major city's are now shadows of their former selves, crumbling into ruin, and being taken over by the land around them. Primal forces have begun to emerge from the planet to take portions of it back. Disc. Corp. Holds control over Ether Frost. They say nothing goes down without them knowing about it. They have spys in every facet of the underground. When people start to figure this out the rebels divided and now slowly they get pushed back until they fade from existence. Mercs and freelancers do the majority of the work for "The people". The meaning of the word justice has faded to black and left the world cold dark and damp.
Ancient technology fuels this era, crude by comparison to the beacon of light that was our world. We study and recreate the technology of old. Raiding old military compounds for clues to our past. Salvaging anything that could be of use to us. Disc. corp has set up a hard-line version of the internet, it much more limited but allows people to keep in contact. Hackers and the like have set up personal lines untraceable and unmonitored.
Most medicine has been personalized but street docs will be more then willing to patch anyone up who requires aid, for a price. Many of the Disc. Corp hospitals are hardly that, they are more like test labs for special people. Most people who check in don't check out. Those that have been lucky to do so, can't even remember why they went after. Many abandoned city's hold breeds of mutants that now populate them. Many believe that this is the result of Disc. corps meddling.
All branches of Disc. Corp are heavily guarded from their outer perimeter to the core of every operation. Everything from food stores to history is stored in these buildings. Very few hostile take overs have succeeded on them. Even when seized they don't take long to fall back under Disc. Corps control. No one knows Disc. Corps intention or if they even have one.
The sea's have been obliterated over the years, they are but dried up, leaving mostly swampland with salt water oasis's at their center. The ocean life has been reduced drastically by pollution and changes in the depth of the water. Mostly abandoned but some partially occupied under water city's do exist. The records of these underwater civilizations and their locations are blacked out, but proof remains in remnants that litter the shore lines.
All forms of entertainment flood the city's, games, cyberspace, raves, clubs, whore houses, arcades, anything that you could possibly want to do can be done there. The engineering block is a good place to go for upgrades and parts that might be required for a ship, mech, enhancement, or even random quirky inventions that people have made. Mercs in general take up refuge in the slums to avoid confrontation with any corp. lackeys. No corporation enters the slums, most of the time the patrols go missing and they never send another to find them.
Buildings are almost all run by computers even in the worst places, this makes it very easy for a hacker to have his fun anywhere he likes. But in the core of high density city's they are illuminated with holographic neon's. Roads are lined with them and street lamps are lit from top to bottom with streams of vibrant neon lights. City cores are generally filled with much more "proper" people. I.E. the ones making a decent enough living to pay tax's.
The further you get from central city's the more barbaric and wastelandish the world seems. Camps of savages ravage the land and attack settlements and even the outskirts of larger city's. People have taken to staying within the city limits for that reason, and no one travels well outside them without a band of mercs for protection.
Honest jobs are hard to come by, and no one outside the core can make enough to just have one. Riots are quickly dealt with and end with movement leaders being publicly executed. Disc. Corp and it's unknown competitors rule the lands with an iron fist. This world is crying out to those who are willing to save it.
What will you do; Take contracts from the Corp.? or Freelance for the rebel movements?
